Jo March : a fiesty, radiant and a relentless character. The way she was portrayed in the movie Little Women, got me mesmerized.
Her passion for writing, independance and shattering the preconceived notion about feminity makes her an indubiously one of the best feminist icons.
Here are some of my favourite Jo March quotes:
“Women, they have minds, and they have souls, as well as hearts. And they’ve got ambition, and they have got talent, as well as just beauty. I’m so sick of people saying that love is all a woman is fit for.”
Women are as talented and as creative as there male counterparts. Although, now people are changing their minds but there still exists a number of people who think the other way round. The plot of the book Little Women was set somewhere around the 19th century, and as history suggests, people in general had the notion that the only sole purpose of a Woman’s life is getting married and nurturing their children and families. (nowadays if a woman wishes to lead her life as a housewife it is her choice, but back then, they didn’t have any choice of any sort and their only option was marriage.)
“I’m not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”
“I intend to make my own way in the world.”
“I want to do something splendid…something heroic or wonderful that won’t be forgotten that won’t be forgotten after I’m dead…I think I shall write books.”
“I can’t afford to starve on praise.”
“I don’t like to doze by the fire. I like adventures, and I am going to find some.”
I am utterly grateful to Louisa May Alcott for giving birth to such a moving story and wonderful characters. Amy, Beth, Jo and Meg will forever hold a special in my heart. They all had their own wonderful stories which in their own ways intended to change the world.
